Title: Unit 9  Saving the earth

Teaching Content: Senior English for China (2A) Lesson 34

Reading Comprehension

Teaching Aids: Multimedia tools, Tape recorder

Teaching Aims and Demands:

1.      To improve the Ss reading comprehension

2.      To familiarize the Ss with the knowledge of the harmfulness of environmental pollution and the importance of environmental protection

3.      To grasp the useful words and expressions:

Four skills: hillside, blow away, Russia, shore, present (adj.), test, dirty (v.), pour, square kilometers, die out, go off, separately, point to

Three skills: area, cattle, cause, limit, gradually, in place, power station sight, lose one’s sight

Two skills: chemical rain, time and time again, Bhopal, the Mediterranean, Lake Baikal, tanker, Alaska

Teaching Procedures:

  Step 1: Greetings (1’)

  Step 2: Revision (4’)

    1. Check the homework exercises. (P113, Ex.3 Dictation for some sentences)

 2. Revise the dialogue in Lesson 34

Step 3: Presentation (2’)

  SB Page 50, Part 1. Hold a brief class discussion on the damage that is caused by pollution. Write notes on the Bb as they are mentioned by the Ss.

Step 4: Reading (32’)

1.      Fast reading: (12’)

a.       Read the three passages quickly and find the places on the map of the world where the damage has happened.

b.      Note making for Part 3

2.      While reading: (15’)

a.      Detailed understanding for some questions:

Earth: Ex.1, Questions 1-3, P114 and then Ex.2, No.1

Air: Ex.1, Questions 4-8, P114 and then Ex.2, No.2

Water: Ex.1, Questions 9-12, P114 and then Ex.2, No.3

b.      Deal with some language problems:

Earth:

Many parts of the world, which once had large populations and produced plenty of crops, have become deserts.

3.      After reading: (5’)

Read aloud after the tape recorder

   Step 5:Consolidation (5’)

1.      Do Ex2 as written work, checking their answers with the whole class (Show some pictures again and try to recall the whole passage)

2.      Do Ex3.

   Step 6: Homework: (1’)

    Write a short passage about pollution.
